Blog/Oh-Crap

No alternative to graphics, sorry

Well i bought a hard-drive on friday - and was pretty impressed by seing it arive this morning already. I was looking forward to getting home to put it in my Dell Insprion 8100 - a Western Digital Scorpio WD800VE - 80 "GB" storage, 8 MB cache and 5400 rpm. - a speed monster (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=102).

It was immediately recognized when i put it in - and in no time time i was at the Debian GNU/Linux Sarge installation prompt (http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/) - and started partitioning - i wanted to use LVM (Logical Volume Management http://mirrors.sunsite.dk/ldp/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html) and reiserfs (http://www.namesys.com)- advanced technology but i have to complement the debian-installer guys on the great work they've done on the installer - it was very easy.

After partitioning the base system was installed (also from CD) - and then it was time to reboot the system, the rest of the installer has also improved alot - the only question i was asked was where to install the thing (please note that i chose the hard partition manually approach - while a windows user would just choose the harddrive to use) and what language and keyboard to use - then it was ready to install! No fiddling around with hardware anymore - it automatically used DHCP to configure the network - i just had to write in the hostname and domainname.

But getting back to the title of this page - i hit enter on the reboot button - and behold! The BIOS POST screen came up like it usually does, and started detecting harddrives - the new drive started making "clicking" sounds and it took along time for the system to get to the point of telling me "couldn't detect that drive".

So there you have it, my first Western Digital drive, my first 2.5" drive - and it's already broken. So it's going back to the dealer, crap! My computer buing luck hasn't been very good lately - i haven't had a single problem when ordering computer stuff yet until this time where i received my Palm Zire this month - and now the harddrive! Ahh well, i guess i'l just have to wait with installing Windows XP on my laptop - eventhough we need a whole lot of windows stuff for a course on mobile platform development tomorrow - as i understand it a microsoft Denmark guy will even come and say "pay me money, and me and bill will fuck you in the ass for free!".
