No alternative to graphics, sorry

Vertigo 0.6.2 is reaching release, we have a feature freeze and i hope to release it this coming tuesday (13/09/05). So far it is running perfectly on this production server.

I even got creative and created a logo for vertigo, which will do until someone with actual skills in that department creates another one.

And now for some ranting:

I use the evolution client for my mail needs (and address book + calendars), a really nice piece of software, but there is one thing i sometimes do, that fucks it up. My mouse pointing thingy is a "IBM-style" tine-joystick sort of a thing (i can't remeber the exact word, but it is affectionately referred to as "the clitoris" by some people, mostly male i might add).

Sometimes this pointer gets stuck with the buttons down even though i have removed my finger from the mouse-click button, it might be a hardware issue, might be a driver issue, i don't really care. Usually i can live with that, but evolution has this strange feature that if you drag a mail-folder onto the message-list all the mails in that folder will be copied to the folder for that message-list. This is really iritating - especially since there is no "undo" function, or "cancel" button while the process is underway - and the process can take quite some time, when it happens with my inbox it takes about half an hour to complete! So i have to wait while the disk churns happily away before i can undo this thing (luckily all the copied mails are marked as "new" so they are easy to delete again).

I think i really need to file a bug on this, either to have a "cancel" button - or even better: to remove this "drag-copy" functionality - it seems almost useless.

Enough about that, another thing just popped into my mind.

I listened to the We Hate Tech guys bash the new Google Talk program - i won't go into details about what i think about Google Talk (since i haven't tried it), but i will state that i think anyone supporting open standards (and Google Talk talks in XMPP) are mighty good friends of mine.

The thing about the We Hate Tech Guys was: the bitched, on and on and on, about the lack of options in Google Talk - what the hell is this! The lack of options means that the program sucks? I use Gossip for my Jabber needs and there are not more than 8 options, at the most, and i have never tampered with any of them.

Could these guys please start making sense and saying which options they are missing in the program? Otherwise they are just idiots bitching about nothing.

Well, enough about that, i'm not standing up for Google, i just like constructive critiscism rather than juvenile "this sucks!" rants.

Oh yeah, and i've just watched the The Scene shows (and subsequently Teh Scene) - and i actually think they are quite nice (even though one can't help but feel the scent of big corporate cash) - but seing these guys use their instant messaging clients just makes me so much happier for Gossip. I mean, what is this, a Circus - blinking thing-a-ma-bobs all around the screen - and irritating windows popping up everywhere.

Ok, i'm done, i don't use instant messaging much anyway, email is the way to go. Bye now, and see you again on tuesday.

Additional stuff: Oh, i almost forget, another this sucks post, i wrote a short article on why Virtools sucks, i wrote a few weeks ago, but just proof-read it again now, so check it out Sucks.

Ha ha, I think we rambled on about Google talk. That happens when you do 1 take totally unprepared like every show :-). Anyway....

Our problem was that it was a very basic chat app. This is both good and bad, as discused in a later episode, depending on how you are looking at things. It is very very simple and simplistic, and if you are looking at doing 1 on 1 talking back and forth it works very well. Also, the basic text chat part is very nice. The bad side is that it really lacked options besides that. No file transfer, no conferencing, etc. Perhaps it is Google's intent to release a bare bones chat program to do only one thing...chat. If not they could of probably held back before releasing it as a BETA. It is a BETA, I understand, but it will be interesting to see where they go with this as they try to control the known world.

Ahh ok Josh, i think i understand it better now, i was thinking in terms of [HTML_REMOVED]things you can turn on and/of[HTML_REMOVED] options, not functionality. The lack of conferencing is definaetely a useful feature (although i have not used conferencing on Jabber yet).

And yes, google is definaetely working their way up the evil ladder, although they are the least evil [HTML_REMOVED]IM company[HTML_REMOVED] at the moment, in my oppinion.
