I just read on the ThinkWiki that Lenovo will now stop supporting Linux, which is really sad because i have been seriously considering replacing my old Dell Inspiron 8100 (with a non-working battery) with the very compact X60 ThinkPad. Because of the good IBM support for ThinkPads on Linux i was hoping to get a laptop where WiFi and suspend was just working out of the box, but now it seems that that support is going away. At least official support.
This is really a shame, the laptop my company supplies is a ThinkPad laptop, and it feels really sturdy compared to my Dell laptop, and most other laptops i've tried. Plus, it has a really nice track-point device, i don't care about the touchpad that all laptops use now a days, it is disabled on my Dell laptop, but the trackpoint on the ThinkPad is really nice, nicer than the Dell one at least. Additionally it has a "scroll" button, when you press that key down, the track point works as a scroll wheel, this makes a normal mouse almost redundant for anything except playing games.
So could somone recommend a sturdy laptop, with a good trackpoint, and it should support at least a gig of memory.
I'm would actually consider buying one of the nice "tiny" Apple PowerBooks or MacBooks or whatever they are called and but Debian on it, theye are even cheaper than the ThinkPads, much prettier, but how sturdy are they, anyway, they don't have a track-point.
The nice thing about the ThinkPad X60 is that it doesn't even have a touchpad, only a trackpoint, and it is really portable - i have started to get the feeling that i can live with a small 1024x768 screen if it gives me a very portable laptop - you can but an external LCD screen on if you would like to. So small is also a requirement.
Of course, small should only be to the point where i am still able to hack on it, do anyone hack on a X60? Is it possible? How small are the keys compared to a normal laptop sized keyboard?
How long it will take for me to make up my mind and buy a laptop is not known, and since i'm looking at buying a flat, i think my money will be marked for buying new furniture (my current sofa was acquired for a case of beer).
Oh, and thanks to KS for pointing out that my comment system was broken, the blog is now open for comments again.

Hey there, i can't remember if i have told you already, but have have bought an [HTML_REMOVED]old[HTML_REMOVED] IBM X22, and i would not say that the keys or the screen is to small. It fits me just right. :) Especialy because it is so portable.... it is the true meaning of laptop. :) Just right now i am sitting in my sofa with the computer on my lap. :)
Oh, i don't think you have told me. I may have to try it one day, if the keys haven't changed that much since then.
I also really like the idea of a real portable laptop, rather than some semi-transportable half-way desktop computer.
I especially like that they have put in a graphics with relatively good open-source drivers. Which hopefully translates to a working suspend-to-disk-while-in-X setup.
You are welcome to come and try it some time. :)
Nu er jeg selvf[HTML_REMOVED]lgelig ikke expert med hensyn til linux drivere, men jeg ville nok kigge p[HTML_REMOVED] enten Acer eller Toshiba's b[HTML_REMOVED]rbare: Acer TravelMate 3300 serien som vejer under 2kg og har et 6 cell batteri s[HTML_REMOVED] den kan k[HTML_REMOVED]rer ca. 3 timer p[HTML_REMOVED] batteri. Modellen TravelMate 3304WXMi har: Pentium[HTML_REMOVED] M 760 (2.0GHz-533Mhz-2MB), Microsoft[HTML_REMOVED] Windows[HTML_REMOVED] XP Professional SP2 Edition, 14.1[HTML_REMOVED] WXGA Widescreen TFT, 128MB delt VRAM, 1024MB (2x512) DDR2, 100GB HDD, IEEE DVD-Dual (double layer), Gigabit LAN, 54Mbit 802.11b/g WLAN, Bluetooth, 5-i-1 kortl[HTML_REMOVED]ser, 6-cell Li-Ion batteri, ezDock port
Duck: I might have to take you up on that :-)
I don't think that i like the Acer laptops that much, they don't seem as [HTML_REMOVED]sturdy[HTML_REMOVED] as the Lenovo ones. They are definaerely more [HTML_REMOVED]designer friendly[HTML_REMOVED], some might even claim that the Lenovo ones are ugly. Toshiba looks a bit more sturdy, and the Portege series looks like they offer the same level of portability as the Lenovo X series.
But both laptops lack the trackpoint which i really like. And the Toshiba Portege series are priced in the same range as the newer Lenovo X series - and come with the new dual core stuff from Intel - though i haven't seen any benchmarks on how well it performs yet.
Martin, you are usually well versed in the benchmarking scene, any good benchmarks on how a dual core and single core scales up - and how do they perform againts a Pentium M.
Oh, and the Lenovo R52 (although it still says IBM ThinkPad on it) also lasts about 3 hours, even with me compiling away.
The Lenovo R52 supplied by GateHouse that is.
[HTML_REMOVED]Our initial analysis still holds true, that for a notebook processor, the Core Duo will be nothing short of amazing for professionals. Looking at the performance improvements offered everywhere from media encoding to 3D rendering, you're going to be able to do a lot more on your notebook than you originally thought possible (without resorting to a 12-pound desktop replacement). In the past, power users on the go had to sacrifice mobility for CPU power, but with the Core Duo, that is no longer the case. You will still most likely have to resort to something larger if you need better GPU performance, but at least your CPU needs will be covered. The one thing that Intel's Core Duo seems to be able to do very well is to truly bridge the gap between mobile and desktop performance, at least in thin and light packages.[HTML_REMOVED]
He, he, i read that article, just yesterday, and i certainly think i can benefit from multiple cores, i don't game anymore, so all i wan't is for my compiler to be quicker.
And i've come to think that i can probably live with a 1024x768 screen, if it means increased portability.
If we talk about a good laptop we find very few which are able to fulfill our requirements.Recently i am using [HTML_REMOVED]a href=[HTML_REMOVED]http://www.retailsdirect.com/ProductList.aspx?subCatId=205[HTML_REMOVED]manufacId=72[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]Lenovo Laptops[HTML_REMOVED]/a[HTML_REMOVED] Really i am impressed with this.is there any other good laptop in market more than Lenovo?
I like cheap laptop these are very user friendly.
